What it does
Daylight in the room with no windows
There are two ways to bring daylight into a room that has none of its own, and this category covers both. A rooflight glazes an opening in the roof — flat for a modern extension or a warm-roof build-up, pitched to follow an existing slope — and drops light into the top floor or a single-storey return from directly above. A walk-on glass panel does the same from the other direction: set into the floor above, a terrace or a side passage, it lets daylight fall into a basement or lower room while you keep the surface you were standing on. Most of the roof work is over rear extensions and loft rooms; most of the floor work is over basement conversions and under rear terraces, where the alternative is a light well that eats the garden or a room that stays a store cupboard.

This category is two jobs in one: rooflights that bring daylight down through the roof, and structural floor glass that brings it up from below. These photographs are the first half — rooflights going in on real sites, fitted by our own team rather than handed to a separate trade. A rooflight earns its place where there's no wall to take a window: a flat-roofed extension, a single-storey return, the middle of a plan daylight can't otherwise reach. Like the rest of what we make, it's surveyed, made and fitted by the same team.

Laminated build-up
Several plies of glass bonded with structural interlayers, so the panel holds together and stays in its frame if the top surface is damaged.
A sacrificial top ply
The uppermost layer takes the wear and the scratches. It is not the layer carrying the load.
Slip resistance
The walking surface is treated rather than left smooth — usually etched or fritted, worked out with you against how wet it will get.
Specified to the loading
The build-up depends on the span and what has to cross it. Domestic floor, terrace and anything with vehicle access are three different specifications.
Common questions
Do you make rooflights as well as walk-on floor glass?
Yes — the category covers both, and a rooflight works the opposite way to a floor panel: it brings daylight in from above rather than up from below. It's the answer where there's no wall to put a window in — a room in the middle of the plan, a single-storey return, a top floor. We make them flat, for a flat roof or an extension, and pitched, to follow a sloping roof. What the panel is built from depends on the roof and the opening, so that's worked out at survey rather than off a standard spec.
Is it actually safe to walk on?
Yes, when it is specified for the span and the loading it has to carry. Walk-on glass is not ordinary glazing made thicker — it is a laminated assembly designed as a structural element, with the load taken by the plies beneath the surface you tread on. What matters is that the specification matches the use, which is why we ask what the panel sits over and what has to cross it before quoting.
Does it get slippery in the rain?
Untreated glass would. The walking surface is normally etched or fritted to give it texture, and how much treatment it needs depends on whether the panel is inside, under cover, or fully exposed. External panels on a terrace get more than an internal floor panel does.
Do you build the opening as well?
No — we make and fit the glass and its frame. Forming the opening, the structural support around it and any steelwork is your builder's or engineer's work. We survey once the opening is formed and the supporting structure is in, so the panel fits what was actually built.
